Welcome to the first SelectOrganic Newsletter  

One year ago, SelectOrganic began its journey with a shared ambition: to explore how selective breeding can support the growth of organic aquaculture across Europe. Since the project officially started in September 2025, partners from research organisations, breeding companies, industry and stakeholder networks have been working together to lay the foundations for expanding the organic fish production and demand in Europe.  

Over the past year, SelectOrganic has moved from planning into action. Following our kick-off meeting at Nofima in Ås, Norway, the consortium has established strong collaborations, launched research activities, engaged with stakeholders across the sector and begun generating the knowledge needed to address some of the key challenges facing organic aquaculture. From understanding breeding practices and fish robustness to strengthening stakeholder involvement and exploring their needs and future opportunities for organic production, important first steps have already been taken.  

In this inaugural newsletter, we are pleased to share a selection of stories that highlight the project's progress so far. The articles provide insights into key activities, introduce initiatives such as the Stakeholder Advisory Forum, and showcase how partners across Europe are contributing to address the project's objectives. They also illustrate the growing momentum behind the vision of an organic aquaculture sector that is both environmentally and animal friendly and economically viable.  

As we enter our second year, we look forward to building on these achievements, strengthening collaboration with stakeholders and continuing our work towards innovative breeding solutions that can support the future boost of organic aquaculture in Europe.
