IMPACT

Enhancing Biodiversity, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Feed Efficiency

SelectOrganic aims to promote sustainable, organic and animalโ€‘friendly production systems by improving feed efficiency, reducing toxic residues, and strengthening animalsโ€™ natural disease resistance. By using climateโ€‘neutral feed ingredients and breeding strategies that preserve genetic diversity and increase fish survival and feed efficiency, the project expects to contribute to:

  • lower carbon emissions significantly by 2030

  • reduce wild-caught based forage fishmeal and soy-based ingredients considerably used in feed, replacing them with low-carbon marine and land-based alternatives, by 2030

  • prevent associated loss of biodiversity both on land and in the sea by preventing overfishing of marine fish and reducing feed residues and toxic chemicals and environment.

Improving Survival, Growth and Product Quality in European Aquaculture

SelectOrganic aims to strengthen fish health and performance through genetic improvement.

By 2030, the project expects to:

  • reduce major bacterial diseases in salmon and rainbow trout

  • lower mortality during heatwaves in seabass

  • increase overall fish survival through wider use of diseaseโ€‘resistant and resilient seed

  • improve welfare traits across farmed species

  • achieve better feed efficiency, leaner fish and significantly faster growth after two generations of selection

  • boost the impact of these gains as organic and conventional breeders and producers adopt improved breeding methods and seed.

These improvements in product quality, survival and feed use are expected to increase value creation in European aquaculture.

Strengthening Trust, Awareness and Demand for Organic Aquaculture

SelectOrganic aims to increase public understanding and acceptance of organic aquaculture production by involving stakeholders, consumers and the wider public in defining breeding goals, shaping incentive policies and communicating project results.

By 2030, the project expects to:

  • improve knowledge and awareness of organic aquaculture among consumers

  • increase demand and willingness to pay for organic products

  • significantly achieve higher sales and value creation

  • support stable growth in the production and consumption of healthy organic aquaculture products

These efforts contribute directly to the callโ€™s objective of strengthening public acceptance of organic aquaculture through genuine stakeholder and consumer involvement.
